THE JIGUEY DAM
There are eight functional dams in the Dominican Republic. the local Encyclopedic Dictionary of Environment states that Jiguey Dam is the main of four others on the river Nizao. It is followed downstream by the Aguacate Dam, Valdesia Dam, and the Las Barías counter-dam. The Nizao river is the main water supply to these dams, which runs between the provinces of Peravia, San José de Ocoa and San Cristóbal, in the southern part of the country. "This hydroelectric complex has a generating capacity of 150 million megawatts, which makes it the largest on the island in terms of energy production".Operation started in 1992, with a width of 97.15 metres and a total length of 122.50. The pressure tunnel is about 6430.19 meters with a diameter of 5.15 meters. The dam's height above the river bed measures 110.50 metres, resulting in a process level between 540 to 550 m. The dam's reserve capacity is approximately 167 970 000 cubic metres (m3).
