LOS CACAOS
The town Los Cacaos is a small working community in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. The community has population of about 2,000 people; of that, 85% of this population have faith and are dependent on the production and profits of coffee farming. In 1979, Hurricane David left the people and villages in turmoil; destroying 90% of their coffee plants. Because of this devastation, it sparked a discussion with the community to began a Fair Trade organization called, Asociatión de Caficultores La Esperanze - The Hope.
The Mountain's of Los Cacaos are located forty minutes away from the provinces capital of San Cristabol. The Mountain's climate is humid temperate with a summer rainy season and a dry winter with possibilities of frost from December to March. With perfect geological and flora characteristics like rocky soils and mixed forests. The town of Los Cacaos has ideal environments and conditions for smooth coffee cultivation under shade.
